Abstract
This document explores the historical context and current challenges surrounding employment opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities in Ireland. It traces the evolution of work activities from institutional settings in the 1930s to the establishment of sheltered workshops and community-based services, highlighting both the benefits and controversies associated with these models. The closure of sheltered workshops following exploitation claims created new barriers, leaving many individuals dependent on day services with limited pathways to meaningful employment. In response, the paper proposes the development of a Micro Social Enterprise programme as an innovative alternative to mainstream employment. This initiative aims to provide flexible, rights-based work opportunities that promote independence, self-esteem, and community participation for adults with intellectual disabilities.
